Statway is a set of accelerated statistical reasoning course offerings designed to teach mathematics skills essential for a growing number of occupations and needed for decision-making under conditions of uncertainty. All Statway courses are taught using a unique pedagogical approach that promotes collaborative learning and addresses social-emotional factors that affect student success. They also employ innovative curricula supported by aligned assessments and an online student platform.
Statway includes a set of term offerings that are designed to meet a range of developmental and college-level student needs. See below for full course descriptions. Students completing Statway will understand that data analysis is a process that begins with the formulation of a question that can be addressed with appropriate data, followed by the development of a thoughtful plan for identifying and collecting the necessary data. Students will know how data can be displayed and summarized in informative ways, and they will understand how the data can be used to draw conclusions in the presence of uncertainty.
The learning outcomes of Statway are grounded in statistical and mathematical reasoning. The reasoning occurs around major statistical topics reflected in the 11 modules:. This offering uses two textbooks and an online homework platform that includes supplemental materials, exercises, and quizzes that support the learning outcomes in each module. The goal of an Accelerated implementation is for students placed in developmental math to complete their developmental math requirements and a college-level statistics course in only one term.
The accelerated implementation is not an official offering, but is supported by Carnegie Math Pathways. Implementation is typically a one-term course with higher contact hours.
We have suggested logistics and strong success data for those interested in this implementation strategy. Statway College is a one-term, college-level Statistics course that addresses all the college-level learning outcomes of the Statway Pathway, and incorporates the same pedagogical strategies, including Productive Persistence.
The course covers all major topics typically contained in a college-level statistics course. It consists of seven modules:. This offering addresses all the learning outcomes of Statway, and incorporates the same pedagogical strategies.
The college-level course covers all major topics typically addressed in a college-level statistics course. The corequisite component addresses the foundational concepts and skills necessary for achieving the college-level learning objectives, and is designed to optimize support for the college-level learning objectives when it is needed. For the college-level component, there is a student workbook for in-class lessons and an online homework platform that includes supplemental materials, exercises, and quizzes that support the learning outcomes in each module.
Additionally, there is a Statway Corequisite workbook and corresponding online homework platform, which both include material to support Statway College. Faculty can choose to teach some or all of the corequisite lessons, depending on the needs of their student population or program.
The corequisite resources address topics in both statistical and algebraic thinking that relate to the ensuing or prior lesson. The college-level component is designed as a 3 or 4 transfer-level credit course. The corequisite materials are designed to flexibly support a 1, 2, or 3 contact hour corequisite course depending on what is appropriate for student and program needs.
The learning outcomes cover fundamental mathematics and pre-algebra and statistics, which students need to succeed in the Pathways, and include major topics from arithmetic, algebra, and numeracy. This offering consists of an online pool of lessons and practice problems from which faculty can construct their own course stand-alone or corequisitedepending on their desired learning objectives and student needs.
The Pathways Bridge Materials are a set of lessons that colleges can use to provide Quantway or Statway students with a bridge to college algebra, business math, or pre-calculus courses. These materials have been collaboratively designed by network faculty using the instructional design principles of the Pathways curricula. These lessons are designed to be implemented in any way that they are needed. For example, they can be administered at the end of a Pathway or integrated within a Pathway.Across the TCUs in our network, student success in the Pathways is 25 percent higher on average than in their original math courses.
Collaboration with TCU faculty has been key to achieving these outcomes. So far, more than 40, students across 21 states have enrolled in Statway and Quantway, and since launching instudents in these programs not only complete their introductory college math requirements at triple the rate of their peers, they go on to transfer and graduate at significantly higher rates. Being part of this network has been wonderful — just interacting with other teachers both in my own college and across the country that are working on this project.

Pathways is designed to address the substantial socio-emotional and psychological hurdles many students face. Drawing on the research base developed over many years, faculty are and have been testing strategies to help students persevere and succeed.
We call this package of skills and tenacity that students need to succeed in an academic setting productive persistence. Embracing the improvement science approach, faculty and researchers have been working together to design, test, and refine interventions to promote student engagement and success. Faculty identified numerous personal and psychological attributes of students who successfully navigate development math, including a belief in their potential as math students, a willingness to face challenges or failure, and relationships with their classmates.
Data collection and analysis are at the heart of the Pathways. As a networked improvement community, all Quantway and Statway students take common surveys and assessments. These shared metrics highlight variation and allow for deeper research around bright spots and areas to improve across the network. Administering a common summative assessment across Quantway and Statway allows all network members to see the clear success this new system is having on student success and where the network should focus improvement efforts next.
